I was sleeping when you woke me
There before me I saw
Angels climbing Jacob’s ladder
They would rise and they would fall
And below them stood the children
With their hands up in the air
They cried for You but they could not
See beyond the darkness there
And I saw You above watching
From Your home all made of light
You were covered all in beauty
But there was aching in Your eyes
On Jacob’s ladder
And the children bled like rivers
But rivers would not wash them clean
And You wanted to be with them
Because You wanted them to be free
So You dressed in cloth and ashes
And You climbed down like a man
And You cried with all those children
Yes You cried like all of them
And You held them like a father,
And You bled ‘til you ran dry
You washed them in Your tears like rivers
‘Til they turned and saw Your eyes
And You took their hands and led them
Where only angels could go through
Now we are climbing Jacob’s ladder
We are climbing it with You
On Jacob’s ladder
